Yellowstone National Park officially opens its West Entrance on April 18th, and with it comes one of the most unique times to visit—opening week.
Snow still lingers. Wildlife begins to move. Trails are quieter. And the first signs of spring stretch slowly across the landscape. At Terra Nova Cabins, we’re just a short drive from the entrance, making this the perfect basecamp for your early-season trip.
Whether it’s your first time visiting or you’re a returning guest looking for a slower season, here’s what you need to know to make the most of opening week in Yellowstone.
1. Expect Snow—and Solitude
Spring in Yellowstone doesn’t mean green grass just yet. You’ll still see snow-covered meadows, icy rivers, and cool mornings, especially in higher elevations. That said, this is a beautiful time to explore the park while it’s quiet and waking up from winter.
Tip: Dress in layers, wear waterproof shoes, and bring traction for slick paths.
2. Wildlife Watching is Excellent Right Now
As the snow melts, bison, elk, wolves, and bears begin moving into lower elevations. The Madison River corridor, just inside the West Entrance, is a great place to spot wildlife—especially early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Reminder: Always keep a safe distance—25 yards from bison and elk, 100 yards from bears and wolves. You don’t want to end up on @touronsofyellowstone.
3. Not Everything is Open—Yet
While the main roads are accessible, not all park services, shops, or visitor centers may be open during opening week. Geyser basins, boardwalks, and major sights like Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Spring are open, but some trails and higher elevation roads may still be closed due to snow.
Tip: Check Yellowstone’s official park conditions before you head out for the day: nps.gov/yell
4. Stay Nearby and Stay Flexible
At Terra Nova Cabins, we offer easy access to the park, Hebgen Lake, and West Yellowstone—without putting you in the middle of the crowds. Whether you’re heading out for a full day in the park or looking for a slower pace by the lake, you’re close to it all.
Pro tip: Book direct through our website and save 30% on spring bookings with promo code SPRING30. Available for a limited time this season.
5. Want a Nighttime Activity? Try Stargazing.
Spring skies are crisp and clear. After sunset, step outside your cabin or head toward Hebgen Lake for a night under the stars. No ticket required.
Make the Most of the First Days of the Season
Yellowstone’s opening week is a chance to experience the park in a way few people do—quiet, slow, and raw. If you’re headed this way, we’ll be here—cabin lights on, mountain air fresh, and the park just down the road.
